Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a sight-threatening condition caused by damage to the Optic Nerve in the eye which transmits images to the brain. Raised pressure in the eye is a major risk factor and there are different types of glaucoma – chronic open-angle glaucoma, primary angle-closure glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma.Glaucoma is more common after the age of 40 and the risk increases with age. Family history of glaucoma, African-Caribbean ethnicity, diabetes and hypertension are also risk factors.Glaucoma is usually treated with pressure-lowering eye drops or laser treatment and surgery.Early detection and treatment can protect your vision so regular eye examinations once a year can help detect early signs of the condition. If you are over 40 years old and have a direct relative who suffers from glaucoma, you are entitled to a free NHS sight test once a year.Eye 2 Eye have the expertise to help detect glaucoma early using Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT), intra-ocular pressure measurement and visual field screening.
